MATRESCENCE.

Understanding Matrescence

Did you know there is a term for the transition into motherhood? For the hormonal, physical, and emotional transformations as well as the identity shifts that happen through pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond? Matrescence was coined in the 1970s by the medical anthropologist, Dana Raphael, who also popularized the word “doula”. You can hear the similarity between Matrescence and Adolescence because there are parallels in these transitional periods, EXCEPT, we don’t talk about Matrescence in the same way we do about Adolescence. Dr. Alexandra Sacks, a reproductive psychiatrist, is leading the charge to mainstream and normalize Matrescence. You can watch her TED Talk for a quick breakdown.

My Role

Whether you are expecting, just entering your postpartum, or years in, my role is to help you create a deeper understanding and connection to your motherhood experience. Depending on where you are in the motherhood journey, we will talk about what has happened and what is happening as you move through becoming grounded in your own experience of motherhood. If you are expecting or newly postpartum I will support your preparation and transformation. Why not get a heads up on what's to come? If you are years into your motherhood and are looking to make time for yourself, to create deeper meaning and compassion regarding your evolution as a mother and woman, and merge the many roles back into your one Self - I am here to support you. This is a fascinating, deep, and textured life experience that is always unfolding and revealing new layers. For four weeks we will have an hour each week to talk about all things you and your experience of motherhood. Weekly chats include:

An Overview of Matrescence

A Hormone Briefing

Postpartum Prepping (if you are in your pregnancy)

Postnatal Depletion

Becoming a Mother

Identity

Managing Expectations

Self Care

You will receive the information we discuss along with recipes, resources, book suggestions, and exercises and meditations for reflection.

Motherhood does not come with a road map. It is not one size fits all. Our goal is to create a deeper understanding of and connection to your identity as a mother and a woman. If you are here, let’s talk.

“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.”

— Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
